Analyzing Shiny Objects Syndrome In America Today

Allen Cardoza, a host on L.A. Talk Radio, discussed the topic of American consumerism with Dr. James. A Roberts, the author of a new book on excessive consumption. The show focused on problems related to spending more than we earn and suggested groundbreaking solutions to reorganize our lives.

The author of “Shiny Objects: Why We Spend Money We Don’t Have in Search of Happiness We Can’t Buy” suggested three indicators of our financial balance. First, how much we have set aside for short-term emergencies. Second, how much we have set aside for long-term emergencies. Third, how much credit card debt we have paid off. If you do not have these in order, then it is time to look at our spending habits.

Dr Robert’s helpful advice can help us to correct the problems that arise from excessive consumption. His practical advice can free us from the cycles of financial stress. His latest book, “Shiny Objects,” discussed the shiny object syndrome. It is far more than a polemic against capitalism or a critique against spending more than we earn. In essence, his advice, if followed, will lead to a more productive life, which will, in turn, lead to a happier life.

Dr. Roberts is a well-known author with approximately 75 articles published in academic literature. He is currently a Professor of Marketing and the Ben H. Williams Professor of Marketing at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, where he has been a faculty member since 1991. His research regularly appears in many of the top marketing and psychology journals and he has received two “Paper of the Year” awards.

Additionally, Dr. Roberts has been recognized for excellence in the classroom where he has taught his brand of marketing and the social ramifications of our consumer culture to thousands of graduate and undergraduate students. A primary focus of Dr. Roberts’s work over the last 15 years has been the psychology of consumer behavior. He is somewhat of an anomaly among marketing scholars, in that his research is largely focused on the “Dark Side” of consumerism and marketing
